Posted: Wednesday 25th January 2012
What is Vitamin D and is there hope beyond the hype? Join Phillip Dowling ( MA – Live food Nutrition, BHSc) and guests to discover more about this powerful nutrient; mostly formed as a result of sunlight exposure on our skin.
Vitamin D affects more than 2,000 different gene functions – from boosting immunity to bone health. But this often misunderstood vitamin has been shown to be at risk of deficiency in 50% of the world’s population.
It’s also a Pacific problem. Studies conducted in Central Otago* identified that most, if not all, apparently healthy Christchurch people did not have sufficient vitamin D in their bodies at some stage during the year. Even in summer, only 12 percent had the optimal level. During July to August, 35 percent were vitamin D deficient.
Join us to learn more about Vitamin D, the significance of sunshine, supplements, how much do we really need & why we aren’t getting enough?
