The Hindu Council of New Zealand launched the nationwide ‘Health for Humanity’ Yogathon during August 2011 to create awareness of the 5000 year old discipline of the mind, body and spirit. The free Yogathon asked Kiwis to collectively perform 100,000 repetitions of the "Surya Namaskar" (Sun Salutation) over a period of 15 days. A repetition of Surya Namaskar consists of a series of yoga postures of well-balanced movements linked with simple breathing technique to provide benefits to both body and mind.

Yoga has been shown to increase the level of gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, a chemical in the brain that helps to regulate nerve activity. GABA activity is reduced in people with mood and anxiety disorders, and drugs that increase GABA activity are commonly prescribed to improve mood and decrease anxiety. Yoga has a greater positive effect on a person's mood and anxiety level than walking and other forms of exercise, which may be due to higher levels of the brain chemical GABA according to an article in peer-reviewed The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

The effectiveness and role of vitamin C in health and wellbeing is controversial, with media, the medical community, CAM practitioners and the public often in disagreement. There is agreement however, that Vitamin C is a water soluble antioxidant needed for normal growth and repair of tissues throughout the body. The body is unable to make Vitamin C on its own, nor can it be stored.

Sustainable Health Care: The Challenges and Opportunities is course is designed for all who are interested in promoting health and wellbeing in the community: practitioners from conventional and complementary traditions keen to integrate their skills, members of the public who want to take charge of their own health, and those involved in academic delivery of integrated health programmes.
The course is presented by Wellpak College Principal Phil Cottingham and acclaimed herbalist Simon Mills.

The intention by the Australian and New Zealand Governments to establish the Australia New Zealand Therapeutic Products Agency (ANZTPA), is welcomed by the Complementary Medicines (CM) Industry said Dr Wendy Morrow, Executive Director of the Complementary Healthcare Council (CHC). Australian consumers have reduced access to Complementary Medicines, which are termed natural health products in New Zealand, due to the different regulations governing our trans-Tasman neighbours. "We note and support the Government's decision to exclude Complementary Medicines from the proposed model of the ANZTPA.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use has for children has almost doubled in the past decade according to Head of the University of Otago, Christchurch's Paediatric Department, Associate Professor Andrew Day.
Professor Day discovered 67% of child patients had been given alternative medicines, with the use of probiotics among patients of a paediatric outpatient service in Sydney at almost double the number of patients using it in a similar study in 2002.
On the advice of friends and family, doctors or other health professionals, CAM (such as probiotics, herbal treatments and osteopathy) had been suggested in 45% of cases, the research found.

Recent research has indicated that long-term yoga participants have significantly gained bone density, which can be attributed to the effects of muscles working against gravity. “Yoga pits one group of muscles against another, exerting many times the force of gravity” experts have said. “That increases the stress on bones, and the bones react by thickening.
